Off-road Test Walk

Oosterzele

16 May 2025

On Friday 16 May 2025, we set off with a diverse group of participants into the beautiful Ettingenbos in Oosterzele. During this unique trial walk Participants — ranging from less mobile adventurers to professionals from the tourism sector — were given the opportunity to try out various off-road accessories to give it a go.

A nature experience without limits

Under a glorious spring sun, we set off at 1 pm GC De Kluize — an accessible starting point with toilet facilities — for a walk through the Ettingen Woods. During the walk, we explored not only the wide paths but also challenging routes featuring sand, gravel and uneven terrain.

The participants tested a range of rugged off-road solutions:

  • Manual all-terrain wheelchairs

  • Wheelchairs with attachments

  • All-terrain vehicles
Each piece of equipment was tested for ease of use, comfort and off-road performance.

First-hand experiences

The reactions were enthusiastic:

“For the first time, I felt truly free in the great outdoors, without having to worry about the ground beneath my feet.”

“The combination of a reliable tool and the right guidance makes anything possible.”

It wasn’t just users, but also staff at tourist information centres and policymakers who discovered just how accessible nature can really be — provided the right tools and minor adjustments are in place.

What we learnt

  • The focus is on the experience: Access to nature is about more than just paths and statistics — it’s about independence, adventure and enjoyment.

  • Assistive devices make all the difference: The right aid opens up new worlds for people with reduced mobility.

  • Testing is essential: Theory and practice often differ. By experiencing things for yourself, you discover what works and what could be improved.

Looking ahead

This trial walk was not only a source of inspiration for the participants, but also an important step in our mission to make more regions accessible to nature lovers with disabilities.

Thanks to the support of East Flanders Regional Fund, CERA and CrelanCo Foundation we were able to invest in new off-road equipment, so that more people will soon be able to enjoy the countryside without a care in the world.
