Experience the Hoge Kempen National Park in a different way
Flanders’ first National Park, now also open to those who want to venture off the beaten track.
Yes, please >
The Hoge Kempen National Park stretches across more than 12,000 hectares — comprising woodland, heathland, gravel pits and open coastal dunes. With a wheelchair-accessible tractor and the guidance of a ranger, you can now venture beyond the tarmac paths: a first in the Benelux. A real experience for the whole family.
The place
The Hoge Kempen National Park is situated in Limburg and is known for its innovative approach to accessible nature — not just via the footpaths, but also through guided activities and aids that take you further than usual.
Behind this innovation is Wannes Smeets, a wheelchair user who is proud of ‘his’ park. Whilst on holiday in the Kaunertal, he discovered the Swiss-Trac and experienced for the first time what it’s like to really go off the beaten track. Back home, the dream grew — and
Since the summer of 2024, the ‘Wheelchair Trekkers’ package has been available to book as a nature experience – the first of its kind in the Benelux.
Within walking distance lies Terhills Resort by Center Parcs, a peaceful, small-scale holiday park where the cottages are nestled amongst water features and natural surroundings. A park that is accessible to all, combined with accommodation that is also accessible — that is what makes this region unique in Flanders.

The accommodation
The adapted cottages at Terhills Resort combine comfort with tranquillity: barrier-free, with wide passageways and adapted bathroom facilities. Thanks to their waterside location, you’re immediately struck by a distinct holiday atmosphere, without compromising on functionality for those who require assistive devices.
A lovely bonus is the tropical swimming pool: thanks to a pool lift and a special pool wheelchair, you can get right into the water with no problems.

The ‘Wheelchair Pullers’ Package
The most innovative offering is the ‘Wheelchair Pushers’ package. A Swiss-Trac — a powerful electric attachment — transforms a manual wheelchair into an off-road companion capable of tackling gravel, tree roots, gentle slopes, forest tracks and heathland paths. A Ranger will take you safely on your way, providing facts and information about the park.
In the Terhills sub-area, there are two signposted routes that take you to the top of the Lang Terril — the most beautiful view in Flanders. The longer route then takes you across the new cycle bridge and around the water: mostly flat, with stunning views of the water features. Soon you’ll also be able to explore this area unaided; for the rougher, more unpredictable Mechelse Heide, a Ranger will remain on hand.
And a wheelchair tug isn’t just for wheelchair users: anyone who, for whatever reason, has difficulty walking can get further with it. You can hire a wheelchair tug with a wheelchair for €20 a day (residents of Maasmechelen enjoy a 50 per cent discount).
