The hidden gem of Southern Norway

Norway · Drangedal, Telemark

Perched above Lake Tokem lies Bjønnly: a beautifully renovated cabin on Norway’s Riviera. Stunning views, well-thought-out amenities and a region with generally fine weather, relatively close to home.

A TRULY NATURAL EXPERIENCE

Woods, a lake and tranquillity right on your doorstep. Gravel paths between the cabins invite you to head outdoors and decide as you go how far you’ll go – perhaps as far as the viewpoint at Olavs Plas.

A UNIQUE STAY

A proper holiday home for five, with most of the beds on the ground floor. A large window overlooking the lake, a wood-burning fire and a sheltered terrace under the overhanging roof.

TAILORED SUPPORT

The aids are ready and waiting in the house: a Hippocampe that can go anywhere but requires arm strength, and a wheelchair with an electric front wheel that does the pushing.

The place

Bjønnly is situated on Bjønnåsen in Drangedal, just north of Henneseid on the banks of the River Toke. Bjønn is the Telemark word for ‘bear’, ly ‘Luwte’ means: the sheltered side, where the wind cannot reach you.

What usually makes a cabin in Norway difficult to access is not the cabin itself but everything around it: a path of boulders, a 15-centimetre threshold. Bjønnly shows that it is possible: close to nature, yet accessible to a whole group of people.

The accommodation

The first thing that catches the eye is the windows: a wide expanse of glass overlooking the greenery, with the lake beyond. In the evening, the wood fire is lit. The alterations remain unobtrusive within the ambience; nothing feels clinical.

From the door, gravel paths wind their way between the hytter, all the way to Olavs plas, which offers a stunning view over the Toke.

Below, you can take a virtual tour of the house and its surroundings.

It feels like pure, unadulterated enjoyment here. In complete tranquillity, and a welcome break from the worries of home.

From Kragerø, a 45-minute drive away, ferries sail to the islands off the coast. Jomfruland is a national park and as flat as can be: wide paths between the beach and the meadows, and a horizon consisting solely of water. Skåtøy is closer, with a café by the jetty.

At Neslandsvatn, there is a paved path leading towards the coast, which is accessible in a standard wheelchair. The Treungenbanen runs between Treungen and Åmli: 35 km with no cars and virtually no incline.
